Submissions

Mountain Gazette Submission Guidelines

Mountain Gazette accepts submissions from writers, photographers, and artists. To keep the process manageable for our small team, please follow the guidelines below.

Written Submissions

Please send pitches of 100 words or fewer. Short, clear ideas work best. If we’re interested, we’ll follow up about seeing more.

Despite our strict word count for submissions, Mountain Gazette does not pay by the word. Rather, we work with our contributors directly to develop a scope of work, a fair price, and a draft submission date. We are former freelancers ourselves. We want our contributors to have clear objectives with their pieces and we aim to provide assistance throughout the creative process. We don’t have a “voice.” We have great contributors. They lend in each issue of MG being a completely unique experience for our readers.

Mountain Gazette covers mountain culture, a wide ranging and interpreted subject matter. We cover what can or has happened when people walk out their front doors. We do not consider gear reviews or group PR trips for the magazine. Be yourself and trust your story and voice. We don’t want the second best Ari Schneider or Jaded Local. We want the best you. Plus, we already have Ari and the Jaded.

Mountain Gazette will cover expenses for trips with express written confirmation from the editor.

We accept submissions for:

-Features

-Mountain Notebook - 750 word single-topic essay

-Poetry

-Art Galleries

-Photo Galleries

Photo and Art Submissions

Send low-resolution samples only. Files can be shared via Dropbox, Google Drive, or a PDF. Do not send high-resolution files unless we request them.

Do Not Mail Submissions

Please do not mail manuscripts, prints, or physical materials. We cannot guarantee their delivery or return. Mountain town mail is…unique. We don’t want to lose your treasured memories. If physical media isn’t professionally scanned, send a good quality phone picture of it.

Editorial Timeline

Mountain Gazette can assign pieces with an editorial timeline of up to 12–36 months before publication. Pitch big ideas, not tight deadline ones.

Response Policy

Mountain Gazette publishes roughly 40 stories per year. Over the last few years we have received more than 6,000 submissions annually. Because of this volume, it is not possible for our team to respond to every submission. If you do not hear from us, please assume we are passing. We appreciate your understanding. Mountain Gazette is not for everyone, but everyone has at least one good story. Keep trying. It took us 60 years to become overnight successes.

Note: Mt. Everest skier Jim Morrison is the only person to ever successfully pitch a story to our editor on a chairlift. Assume you are not Jim Morrison. Unless you are in which case hi Jim.

Print-Only Editorial

Our editorial content appears in print only. A digital copy or PDF for personal websites or portfolios will not be provided unless you receive express written permission from the publisher. We do have a product photographer take images of each issue that we can share with contributors upon request.

AI Policy

Mountain Gazette is made for and by human beings using actual intelligence. The use of AI in pitching or writing is strictly prohibited. Submissions found to use AI will result in the submitter being banned from future consideration and may, at the discretion of our social team, be publicly tarred and feathered.

We understand the world is changing quickly. Around here, we aim to slow it down a little.

Please write your own pitches. Send them to help@mountaingazette.com, Subject line: Your Name: submission name
