Ama Dablam in the Khumbu Region
Photos by Philippe Gatta - This spring, Philippe Gatta and Jean-Marc Wojcik climbed Ama Dablam (22,493 feet), one of the most amazing peaks in the Khumbu region in Nepal. The two French climbers made a fast expedition – a 16-day round trip from Katmandu. They climbed the Southwest Ridge (VI 5.9 60°, 1,500 m) without Sherpa support and in rather unstable weather. On May 3rd, after 24 hours of snow fall, they took advantage of a short weather improvement to go for the summit. They decided to go straight from the camp 2 (19,685 feet), skipping the exposed camp 3. Jean-Marc decided to turn around at 6,300 meters, and Philippe continued alone. The weather deteriorated again, and Philippe reached the top in poor visibility at 3:15 p.m., making the 3rd ascent this year. Find more info about the route and photos at Philippe's website: http://www.philippegatta.fr/amadablam2.htm

2010 Mountain Dog Photo Contest
We thank everyone for their submission (pun intended) to this year's contest. It's unfortunate that we could only squeeze in a fraction of the dogs to our February, 2010 issue, which is why we are extra proud to feature them all in this exclusive online gallery. For the first time, I was the one and only judge. So, if anyone has any sticks to fling, fling them my way, and I promise to fetch them all. To those who took the time to send me dog photos, I owe you all a big frothy carbonated beverage. And, muchas gracias to Ruffwear for providing the prizes for this year’s contest. —MJF

DWS: The Mallorca Experience
Photos by Chris Weidner - Over three weeks in September, five North Face team members (Emily Harrington, Alex Honnold, James Pearson, Matt Segal and Cedar Wright), two photographers (Tim Kemple and Patrick Bagley), and eight other climbers (Sam Elias, Emily Brazenall, Beck Kloss, Matt Bird, George Taylor, Cerian Lewis, Emma Coombes and myself) rallied to the Spanish island of Mallorca that sits just east of the mainland in the Mediterranean Sea. On any given day there were between seven and twelve of us sharing a house, partying, and trying not to fall. The 20 to 60-foot limestone sea cliffs were our boulders, and the Med was our crash pad. Every climbing day involved salty air, humid rock, spoogy shoes, and extra chalk — plus an extraordinary dose of fear. Read more at DailyCamera.com.

Eternal Mountain Landscapes
Photos by Brooks Institute student Richard Tyler Gross / www.rtylergross.com - The images of R. Tyler Gross reflect a vision into his soul through which he invites others to share in his experience. Landscape and wildlife photography were initially what ignited the fire, what is now an eternal flame, of his photographic career. He feels that the more he can connect with the natural world, and its energy, the better he can express the undying beauty of this land and his vision. His passion for photography and the outdoors is an ongoing quest of finding the perfect balance within himself, nature, and the subject being photographed.

Searching for Alpine Perfection in the Bugaboos

Standard proceedure, before venturing into the wilds is to wrap your car with chicken wire, protecting it from the rubber eating porcupines. Shown is this gallery, Schaar has captured many stuning views and routes such as: the West Ridge of Pigeon Spire, the SE Ridge of Brenta Spire, the NE Ridge Bugaboo Spire, the Kraus McCarty and Sunshine Crack on Snowpatch Spire.

Monkey Face Highlinin'
Words and photos by Tyler Roemer - On July 2009 a crew of Oregonians rigged up a highline on the 350-foot Monkey Face on the backside of Oregon's Smith Rock State Park, home to routes: Just Do It (5.14c), the Backbone (5.13a), Spank the Monkey (5.12a) and Astro Monkey (5.11d). With their tension system tight, harnesses, and fall leashes quadruple checked Joel Sprenger, Chuck Williams, and Tyge Shelby inch their way into the mouth of the Monkey. The highline session went into the evening hours with knee drops, turn arounds, pounding hearts, and only a couple falls in the bag. A quote that resonated through the evening was, “Who needs to jump out of a plane when you have this.” —Greg Garretson. See more at tylerroemer.blogspot.com

The Wonders of Hampi, India
Photos by Steve Walters / walterscreative.com - When I first got off the train in the neighboring town of Hospet, I couldn't imagine that this was the world class bouldering area. There wasn't a boulder in sight, just fields and cocoanut trees. After 10 minutes on the bus, though I could see my mistake. The boulders seemed to rise up out of the ground, a more prolific crop than any the farmers were growing. Adding to the magic are the 650 year old temples , forts and remnants of a city larger than Rome at its peak. Now, the population of around 3000 has established a very friendly town catering to tourists and climbers. Between the boulders, temples and the friendly people, Hampi really is a climbers dream come true.

2009 Mountain Dog Photo Contest
M. John Fayhee's inspiration behind the Mountain Dog Photo Contest was unusually succinct: "Mountain people are dog people," he declared. "I'll bet a shitload of photos come in." And come in they did - hundreds of them! Congratulations and thanks to everyone who submitted photos to this year's contest.

Alpine Ecstasy: Dolomites, Julian Alps and Mountains of Bulgaria
Photos by Vladimir Donkov / verticalshot.com - Vladimir Donkov is a 22-year-old Bulgarian photographer with a passion for mountains and climbing. Since high school he has been working as a freelancer around Europe and the US. Donkov is always living his dreams, constantly looking for a new destination to setup his tripod and wait for the best light. Being out in the cold at 4am is not something strange to Vladimir, he even prefers it over the warm hut... His motto is simple: "There are no impossible places to shoot". In this gallery are photos of the Dolomites in Italy, the Julian Alps in Slovenia and a few shots from the mountains in Bulgaria.
